Prohibition of demonstrations, Observers: This has only happened since the reformation

JBN.CO.ID ■ Political observer Pangi Syarwi Chaniago said, the emergence of a ban on demonstrations leading up to and during the inauguration of the president-vice president for the 2019-2024 period, only this time occurred during the reform era.

Pangi worried that the prohibition from the police on the grounds of using discretion would disrupt the democratic climate in Indonesia. Especially if the reason for the use of discretion continues to be used, not only October 15-20.

"Actually, if you look at existing phenomena, this is the first time this has happened. Previous inaugurations have never been banned. Why should there be worries like this, maybe only the Police know, "Pangi said as quoted by jpnn.com, Friday (18/10)

The executive director of the Voxpol Center for Research and Consulting later emphasized that in terms of order and security, the existing ban was not a problem.

But in terms of freedom of opinion expressing aspirations, raises problems. Because the constitution guarantees the freedom of citizens to express their opinions in public.

Because expressing public opinion is protected by the constitution, according to Pangi, police discretion should not prevent the community from carrying out demonstrations.

"So the point is, if it is only limited, it is not allowed to protest around the DPR / MPR Building on 15-20 October, it is not really a problem. But if it continues after October 20, it will certainly be a big problem, "concluded Pangi.
